June in Oklahoma

In Oklahoma, we drove by these fields about every day.  I finally stopped as we left for the airport.  And I'm happy to report the ticks stayed away from me this time.

Speedy Katydid

My cousin and I had to ask our Aunt about the singing we heard every evening in Oklahoma.  Frogs, birds or insects?  "Katydids," she said.  Then she called me over to show me one hanging out on her truck.  

 He wasn't into posing, and quickly kept moving directly toward me and the camera.  Aunt had him on her cane for a while, but he could walk to the end of it in no time.  She'd turn it around and he'd do it again.

He moved back to the car and then for me.  My aunt thought it was my shirt color, but I think he was going for anything taller than the car.  It took this photo before I realized how fast he was climbing. 

Finally, we relocated him to a plant, with no harm to either of us.

"I'll Drive You"

Don't tell my subaru, but it's been a lot of fun driving this ford escape around in the hills and curves of NE Oklahoma. It's not the rental car I expected. I'm glad it's what I ended up with, though. So who else need a ride somewhere?

At the Lake

Oh yes. There is a lake here. And aunts and uncles and cousins. So far, I've avoided the ticks.

An Invitation to Linger

It is a good thing DH doesn't read this or he would change his memorial plans.

It is easy to spend a bit of time at the Cayuga Mission Church and its cemetery. Mr Scearcy made sure you won't leave in need of an outhouse. (a nice one too, with a seat for the taller folks and a seat for the little folks.)

Cayuga Mission Church

This church has served the community around Grove, Oklahoma since 1896. Mathias Splitlog constructed this church of local hewn limestone for his wife, Eliza Splitlog. She died before it was completed. Her memorial service was held here anyway. It is a very peaceful location overlooking one of the many lake coves.

Hungry Holler Art Refuge

On the drive to grand lake, we saw these playful bicycles riding along the fence, up in the tree and down the other side.

I'll post a different art refuge on June 20th.

Next Stop: Grand Lake

First, a GPS found Starbucks in Owasso, Oklahoma. No more Starbucks, but we had an interesting discovery on the drive. More later.

Children's Museum in Charleston.

Castles, ships, water activities (& floods), balls, garden (with ripe cherry tomatoes) and more. A lot of future business majors were at work in the children's market play area (with scanners even). Then the pirates raided the grocery section for ship supplies.

Plays With Planes

Near Savannah with young great-nephews at the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum. We saw a lot of planes but the history exhibits will have to wait until another day.
