A quick shot in the dark light of a pending thunderstorm, following a week of hot weather. It was thundering while I planted the cucumbers and squash, the last of my seedlings to go in the ground. Still no rain yet, but we're ready!
DH made it home tonight with salmon he caught yesterday. A salad from the garden including the first of the peas and broccoli, with a little spinach and chard along with the lettuce. Now that was a nice meal, just in time to send me off on a trip in the early morning. I do hope to make it to the internet while traveling, maybe even with some guest gardens. If not, I'll have material for later posts!
I was sure I would see Petunia this weekend. She might have been there, but I didn't see her. One of the snake crew did leave their old coat in the pumpkin patch yesterday. In between my laying down the coffee bags in the morning and planting pumpkin seedlings in the evening, one of them found the coffee bags to be a nice place to trade last year's fashion for something new.
Salads these days are a mix of chopped pattypan squash, carrots, tomatoes and maybe a cucumber. Add some cut up "ribbons" of chard, a little olive oil and balsamic vinegar, plus herbs and garden grown garlic. Stir well. 
I have no zucchini this year, and these pattypans will be back in the garden next year (but haven't decided about zucchini yet). 
Tasty lemon cucumbers. I understood cucumbers wouldn't grow as well here as they did in Alabama, so I settled for zucchini in the salads. Let me say this: Not the Same! So, I'm happy to find these perfectly sized cucumbers that will produce here in the NW.
Above, the cucumbers growing up the old gate. These vines aren't very long so this gate seems about right for a little vertical growing. On the next row behind them in the in the photo are Delicata squash plants (bush variety). First time to grow these too.
The Delicata squash will develop more distinct green strips as they mature (I think). Looking forward to the: "sweet nutty flavor with hints of brown sugar and butter"!

Here are the lemon cucumber and rouge vif d'etampes pumpkin seedlings from seeds planted May 13. There is also one delicata squash seedling but the romulus zucchini have still to sprout. One cosmos and 3 marigolds have also sprouted. I plan to start some pumpkins and squash outside soon. I'm starting some inside and some outside to see if there is any difference in how well they grow. Our weather stays cool this time of year and these warm weather vegetables might like spending a little time inside.
